History of the Grid technique
The History of the grid technique date back to the day of Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, who was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, ..(e. g. . Wikipedia)
He formed the grid technique to make it easy to create accurate drawing from photos or what ever they used to reproduce images in his day. What is the grid technique? Observe figure 1
Did you notice the horizontal and vertical and diagonal lines separating .and dividing the space in the cube. These lines serve as a guide to producing an accurate drawing. The more lines in each direction, the more accurate the drawing can be.
Let’s move on to basic shapes.
Basic shapes
We will discuss this briefly for I would like to go on to the next part and get down to business with a demonstration on how the grid technique can be used while painting in Microsoft paint. The basic shapes consists of:
1. The circle
A. Spear
2. The square
A. Cube
3. The triangle
A. Cone
4. The rectangle
A. Cylinder
From these basic shapes and derivatives of each shape, all things made, natural or man made, all have representatives of these basic shapes. Now look around the room and pick out all of the basic shapes that you see. Yes, you have found a representative of all of them, didn’t you? If you did, now you are starting to think like an artist. Now. Down to business.
Using the grid technique in Microsoft paint. Notice figure 2.
Here you will find some of the tools in Microsoft paint that one can use to do digital paintings. Read the help data base to find out how these things work, and what they can do. I even use these tools to do mechanical drawings for my inventions I work on, also for make animated drawings, making frame by frame drawing until I have enough to make a movie, and then I load them into windows movie maker. Simple Graphics with the right visual impact is the key, not perfection. Drawings that look too perfect, look like one cheated or traced it.
One needs to be perfect enough to have the most accurate drawing possible with out looking like one took a short-cut and just painted over a photo and misleading others to make them think it was done free hand. I have done it before my self to save time, but only once or twice for given occasions, but I will never try to sell those paintings. Notices figures 3a-3g

What are the steps from our cute little subject on the left to the master-peace we see on the right?
figure 3b This is how I apply the grid in Microsoft paint. I divide the subject into separate sections, giving each one it’s own file name, and paint each one until they are as accurate as possible, until they are all finished.

After the are all finished, each one is loaded on to a master copy-file until:

Walla! The finished product. Ready to be printed framed and soled by mail, or via digital delivery. I prefer to print them, frame or matt them for easy mailing to my customers.
How to use the grid technique to become a Better Artist
Obviously this is an excellent way to use the grid technique to become a better Artist. The sky is the limits on regular art paper, on in Microsoft paint. Let your creativity and your imagination just run wild in Microsoft paint and you will see what I mean. They can be some powerful tools for art, or for animation.
Conclusion
That is a wrap? I hope you enjoyed the program. And until next week, keep drawing.
